Want to make your Halloween really spooky? When I asked the question "How safe is glyphosate?" I expected controversy, but there is a horror story here that has me downright scared. Monsanto (the manufacturer of Roundup) has been the bogeyman to many for years, but they seem to be making enemies at a rather quick pace these days. The internet is full of rants about Roundup Ready Seed. Monsanto has modified the genetic make up of various crops, making the plants resistant to Roundup. This allows the farmer to mass spray the field, saving time over having to spot spray weeds that are competing with the crops, but also greatly increasing the amount of glyphosate and the inert ingredients released into the environment. Glyphosate is the number one selling herbicide in the world surpassing the nasty paraquat (of 1960's marijuana renown) at the end of last century. Glyphosate is supposed to be safe, but there are scientists scattered around the world that are starting to investigate this ubiquitous herbicide.
Want one more nightmare in honor of the season? That would be the unfathomable amount of information available on the internet about this herbicide. Short of a degree in chemistry and another in library science, I don't know how to sort through even a hundredth of the available information. Who are these organizations and where does their information come from?
